Charles Westley Newcomer, Jr. ~
June 13, 1923 – December 31, 2010

Obituary

Charles Westley Newcomer, Jr. was born on June 13, 1923 to Charles Westley Newcomer, Sr. (of Bradley, PA) and Goldie Rachel Darling Mills Newcomer (of Leisenring, PA) in Connellsville, Pennsylvania in Fayette County. He was the third of five children. His was brother of Grace Hatfield, now in Virginia, Gail Sorenson, of Brookpark, Ohio, and the late John Newcomer and Bob Newcomer

Charles attended Redstone High School in Republic, Pennsylvania and attended the Allyson, Pennsylvania Christian Church. Charles entered the Navy in 1943 and served our nation in World War II, setting out to sea and serving in numerous battles. He concluded his service in 1946 and returned home.

Upon returning home Charles was encouraged by his father to meet a young woman who was working at the nearby grocery store, Madeline Mary Doboyne, a Uniontown girl. Then, on June 16, 1951 Madeline and Charles were married at St. Nicholas Greek Catholic Church, on Market Street, in Brownsville, PA by Father John Sokol.

Charles moved to Cleveland and prepared an apartment for his wife on Seymore Avenue. In March of 1956 Madeline and Charles gave birth to their son, Thomas Charles Newcomer.

Charles attended school in Cleveland to become a bricklayer, a vocation he would have until he would retire at age 62 in 1984. As a bricklayer, Charles worked for quite a number of companies and worked primarily on larger public buildings, including schools and hospitals, several along W. 25th, working with Local 5.

In Cleveland, Charles and Madeline faithfully attended Franklin Circle Christian Church where Charles would join on March 30, 1958. He was baptized on Easter Sunday, April 4, 1958 by the Rev. Ernest S. Harrold.

The family would live on Seymore Ave., Walton Ave., W. 134th St., before settling in at 10799 Richard Drive in Parma, Ohio.

Over the years Charles and Madeline had the joy of celebrating the birth of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in addition to enjoying their son and his wife, Jane. Charles was cherished grandfather of John (Chanice), Miranda (William), Charlie, Nancy and Brittany; and great-grandpa of Torri and Kayla

In the past few years Charles’ health had declined, primarily the limitation of his mobility. This past year he became ill enough to be moved to a health care facility. Then sometime in the early morning hours of Friday, December 31, 2010 Charles W. Newcomer died at the Pleasantview Care Center on Ridge Rd. He leaves a strong and abiding legacy with his family and friends alike.

Eulogy:

Charles was “amazing,” according to his beloved wife, Madeline. He was punctual, on-time, and had a place for everything and made sure everything had its place, according to his son, Tom. He fixed things, including his cars, and fixed them as soon as they needed it, as soon as possible. He didn’t let things get run-down, which meant things would really last. He believed in quality and made sure everything he worked with was of good quality. His granddaughters noted that he was sarcastic, funny, had a good sense of humor, always had a joke at hand or was contemplating the next one. He was mostly quiet, but was always paying attention.

Charles valued his family above all else. He was always there for them when they needed him, and was a steady, sure presence. He was the epitome of a “good provider,” for there was always food on the table and a roof over their heads. He loved his family, especially his grandkids, and he would smile with delight when they entered into the room. He even smiled at them when he was in pain and in the nursing home. And he valued friendship. He and Madeline have two dear friends, John and Mary Kolesar, in Clearwater Florida where they visited from October to May every year for twenty years! And after he retired, a group of neighbors and friends began going out every morning for breakfast at different restaurants for fun and fellowship.

Charles also loved to garden and tend to his yard and his trees. He raised tomatoes that were larger than you could imagine, and grapes on the vine. He had plum, apple, and pear trees.

And Charles and Madeline were devoted church-goers, attending worship every Sunday in their familiar pew. Charles was a Deacon of the church, and showed his support of his church in very real and lasting terms.

Charles Westley Newcomer, Jr. will be greatly missed by many, especially his beloved wife, Madeline, his son, Tom, and their entire family.
