Youth Group News

Some of you may be wondering about the name of the youth group. I think everyone is familiar with the name “Jammers” that has been used in recent years here at Franklin Circle to refer to the youth group. Then I have been using the terms Chi-Rho and C.Y.F. (Christian Youth Fellowship) when referring to the youth. For those of you who may not be familiar with these terms, I thought some back ground information would be helpful. Our denomination uses these terms to describe the fellowship groups available to youth. Chi-Rho (pronounced ki-row) is designed for middle school age youth. While C.Y.F is for high school age youth. These guidelines are mostly used for attending events such as camp and conference, as well as other events put on through out the year. Typically the two groups would meet separately.

But at this time our groups are small so we will meeting together. Of course, the ultimate goal is grow to the point that each age group will meet separately. I feel it is important to have consistency with our denomination and give our youth the opportunity to identify with a larger body of youth. So you’ll be hearing these terms a lot more, but if you should call the kids the “Jammers” that’s ok too. A quick history lesson, in 1920 our denomination established the United Christian Missionary Society . This organization served Disciples ministries through the 1920’s, 30’s and 40’s. Many agencies and committees were developed. The most commonly known grew out of the fellowship concept. In 1944 the Christian Youth Fellowship was established. I’m happy to say that 55 years later, youth ministry is still a vibrant part of the body of Christ.

Last month, I mention a lot of fun things the youth would be doing this summer. We started things off by working the church booth at Open Air in Market Square, the kids spent the day passing out church information and inviting other youth they met to visit our church. We had our sleep over on June 5th and helped out at the safety fair on June 6th. The kids worked hard to help set up and tear down. Plus they ran the puppet theatre. We are beginning a puppet ministry, so everyone will be seeing the puppets again soon. On June 21st our high school youth headed off to Camp Christian with our volunteer driver Stacy Bowen. A big thank you to Stacy! July is just as busy. First, the week of July 5th Franklin Circle hosts a youth group from Tylersville Road Christian Church near Cincinnati, Ohio. They are on a missions trip. It is my hope that some of our youth will be able to join them in their work and also host some fellowship time during their stay. We have our car wash coming up on July 12, and we plan on attending Open Air at Market square again on July 18th.

The youth group will continue to meet through out the summer months. For the summer we will be reading A Handbook for Today’s Disciples by D. Duane Cummings. Each week we will cover a chapter. This book provides information on Disciples heritage, worship, mission and structure. It is my goal to educate the youth on our denominations history and understand our founding principles. Pastor Allen uses this book with his new members class, it is an excellent source for anyone wishing to know more about the church.

June 2009

Summer is almost here, which means our youth will be very busy.  To start off, the youth will be working the church booth at Market Square on May 31st.  We hope to make know to other youth in the neighborhood what is available to them at Franklin Circle. N ext we are having a sleep over on Friday, June 5th. All youth are invited. W e’ll be making pizza, watching movies and playing games. A great way to get to know each other better and have fun.  The next day, June 6th is the Fire Safety Fair, the youth will be helping the Christian Education Team with the fair and will be putting on puppet shows through out the day.  We have to thank Claude Pittman and Al Betts for helping us with the materials to build the puppet theatre.

And of course, Camp Christian, four of our youth will be attending C.Y.F. camp June 21st -27th. Our campers are Jessie Bessner, Tori Scheeff, Cristina Jorge and Becky Raspe.  It’s always nice to get letters at camp.  Mail delivery is slow, send mail early in the week.

Thank you to everyone for supporting their fund raising projects. Without your support this would not be possible. We also have two youth on the church softball team, Jessie Bessner and Matt Monhart. They have been practicing hard. Come out and support the team.
Thank you,
Colleen

Youth Room To Be Painted

The Youth Group is very excited to paint and decorate their room.  They have decided to paint a mural on one of the walls.  We are asking for paint donations.  Don't go out and buy paint for us, we are looking for any paint you may already have in your home.  Any amount or color would be very helpful, murals often need many different colors and we can mix similar colors.  Please bring your paint to church on Sundays or call Colleen Munley at 216-543-7165 to make arrangements for pick up.  Thank you!

C.Y.F. State Conference

Three of our youth attended C.Y.F. State Conference at Hiram College March 13, 14, and 15: Jesse, Cristina, and Tori.  All had a wonderful time.  We would like to thank the Mission Council for supporting this trip.  Those who attended created a slide show of pictures from their trip.  Their presentation was during Community Hour on March 22nd.  If you missed the presentation and would like to see their pictures, please let us know, we'd be happy to show them to you.

Youth Service Project

As a service project, the youth group will be attending the regional work day at the Cleveland Christian Home on April 4th.  We'll have a great time in fellowship and we'll have fun getting dirty!  More on that next month.
